A player that has commanded over £7
million in transfer fees during his career, the capture of Gary
Rowett for free was an amazing coup for the Brewers.
Gary was forced to retire from the
professional game due to injury just 13 games after a £3.5 million
move to Charlton Athletic. He had started his career at Cambridge
United before spells at Everton, Blackpool, Derby County, Birmingham
City and Leicester City.
Gary was offered the chance to re-launch
his career at the Brewers after chatting to Nigel Clough as their
young sons played football in a Sunday parks game.
Gary's class and experience was clearly
evident and produced some sublime performances. He was most
effective in defence but often fancied himself as a makeshift
attacker.
Gary struggled to fully shake off the
knee injury that had forced his premature retirement and he
signalled the end of his career in March 2007.
