Nicknamed
"Sonny", George Hunter was born in Troon on 28th August 1930.
He moved South from Darlington in July 1962, having previously
played for Crooshouses Waverley, Riccarton Glencairn and Neilston
Juniors (who he joined in 1947) in Scottish Junior Football before
moving to Glasgow Celtic 27 December 1949.
It was whilst with Celtic that he won a Scottish Cup winners medal
(in front of 133343 spectators) in the 1950-51 season.
After catching TB (in late 1951) Hunter moved to Switzerland seeking
a cure and returned in 1952, however he was unable to recapture the
form he was in when taken ill and left Celtic to join Derby County
(having made 38 senior appearances for the Glasgow club) - on a free
transfer - on 30 April 1954 before moving to Exeter City in August
1955.
In 1960 he was allowed to join Yiewsley - again on a free transfer.
His next move was in June 1961 when he joined Darlington.
His stay at the Recreation Ground ended when he moved to Burton
Albion in June 1963, where he stayed until moving to Matlock Town in
September 1965. This was to be Hunter's final club as he retired in
May 1966.
He died on 10th May 1990, in Nottingham.
