After
being overlooked by both Derby County and Nottingham Forest, Ian
Hutchinson joined the Brewers at the end of the 1960's in a time of
transition for the club. The legendary strike force of Stan Round
and Richie Barker was about to come to an end and the club was beset
by financial turmoil.
Ian still
managed to make a big impression on the Albion fans during his 49
appearances, scoring 19 goals.
It was a
big disappointment when Ian was allowed to leave the club to sign
for Southern League rivals Cambridge United, and he really hit the
big time when he was signed by Chelsea in July 1968.
He went
on to become a big part of the success that Chelsea enjoyed at the
start of the 1970's, notably scoring one of the goals in the 1970 FA
Cup final. His physical style of play saw him pick up a string of
injuries that ultimately ended his career prematurely. He retired
from playing in July 1976, aged just 27.
He died
in September 2002 after a long illness.
