Started his career with Nottingham Forest before making appearances for Lincoln City, Mansfield Town, Chesterfield, Chester and Scarborough.

He was player/manager at Scarborough, guiding the club to success in the Bob Lord Trophy.

John played seven games for Burton in the 1984/85 Northern Premier League season before leaving to take up a career with the Metropolitan Police.
