Phil joined the Brewers in March 2005 after being released by West Bromwich Albion. He had been a regular in the reserve side at the Hawthorns, where he had played alongside Dan Crane, but he never made the breakthrough into the first team squad.

He came to Eton Park on a non-contract basis to help the club deal with the fixture congestion caused by a successful FA Trophy run. He put in a string of decent performances during his time at the club, operating in both defence and midfield positions.

He was released after just 7 appearances after being told he could not be guaranteed a first team place next season, and left the club to join Moor Green.
