Steve joined the club from
Alvechurch at the start of the 1987/88 season as the Brewers sought
to rebuild following the break up of the FA Trophy final side.
Cotterill scored 15 goals in
his first season but it was the signing of strike partners Mark
Whitehouse and John Gayle the following term which really launched
his career.
The three players plundered 81
goals between them during the 1988/89 season, with Cotterill scoring
29 times.
His performances persuaded
then Premier League Wimbledon to sign both Cotterill and Gayle in a
deal thought to be in the region of £120,000.
He made only 25 appearances
for the Dons during a four year spell, and spent time on loan at
Brighton & Hove Albion. In 1993 he signed for AFC Bournemouth making
50 appearances in three seasons before his career was cut short due
to injury.
He moved into management,
taking over from former team mate Laurie Sanchez at Irish League
side Sligo Rovers.
He moved back to England to
rejoin former club Cheltenham Town as player/manager and guided the
club from the Dr Martens League to Division Two as well as winning
the FA Trophy.
He later went on to manage
Stoke City before leaving to become assistant manager at Sunderland.
He was sacked by the Black
Cats after just 20 games but was back in management in 2004 when he
became manager at Burnley. He left Turf Moor by mutual consent in
November 2007.
