Russell became the Brewers record signing when he joined the club from Kidderminster Harriers in July 2009, exceeding the £17,500 paid to Ilkeston Town for Christian Moore.

He began his career as a trainee at Birmingham City and had a spell with Harriers before joining Scunthorpe United.

After three years with the Irons he returned to Aggborough and established himself as one of the most highly rated players outside of the Football League.

He made 178 appearances for Harriers, scoring 26 goals.
